CUMBERLAND — Over 16 weeks with Western Maryland Disc Golf this year, Bill Shreve has averaged 49.31 strokes every 18 holes. Through 15 weeks, Scott Mallery has an average of 50.92.

So it’s not much of a surprise, then, that the two would be close in the weekly standings and among the overall points leaders in the men’s division after Week 3 of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Summer Flex League.

Scott Mallery drives from No. 3 on Sunday afternoon.

Between Friday and Monday, 10 players completed 16 rounds of disc golf at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland. Each player can play an unlimited number of rounds during the specified time frame, but at least two players must be on a card. Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, wasn’t much of a fan of his round over the weekend. He finished with a 56, which put him in third behind Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, and Ethan von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland.

Shreve decided he could do better than that. He was right. Shreve returned late Monday evening for a round when both the sun and temperature dropped a bit, and was rewarded with a score of 51, including six birdies.

Mallery, meanwhile, played a one-and-one round on a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon. He led the way with a club-best 49, including six birdies and par on the remaining 12 holes. The difference between Shreve and Mallery proved to be the wooded hole on the back nine. From the tee, Shreve ran into trouble with the trees and double-bogeyed the basket, while Mallery managed a par 4.

Ethan von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland, finished one stroke behind Shreve and only three strokes behind Mallery. Von Hagel earned four birdies but bogeyed No. 18 to hand second place to Shreve.

Shreve might have had to settle for second place in the Week 3 results, but managed to hop over Mallery’s son, 19-year-old Colby Mallery, for first place in the men’s division of the Summer Flex League. While Scott Mallery earned nine points — five for the win, one for participation and three bonus points for playing in three consecutive SFL events — Shreve matched him on all but the fifth point for the win.

Entering Week 3, Colby Mallery led the men’s division with 13 points. Shreve was second (10) while Scott Mallery was third (7). After the second-place Week 3 finish, Shreve leads with 18 points, holding a slim two-point lead over the elder Mallery (16) while the younger Mallery, who was unable to play this week, slipped to third (13).

Shreve, Spradlin notch 3rd straight victories

It’s not as ho-hum as one might imagine, but Becky Shreve and Josiah Spradlin seem to sometimes make it look that way.

Shreve, 41, of Cumberland, earned her third consecutive SFL victory by throwing a 57 on Monday evening, four strokes better than her 61 over the weekend. Krystal Mallery, 50, of Mount Savage, placed second in Week 3 with a 71 while Stephanie Spradlin, 42, of Frostburg, took third (73).

Shreve increased her lead over Spradlin in the SFL women’s division to three points from two points, holding a 23-19 advantage. Mallery is third (11) while Nicole Davies, 27, of Mount Savage, is fourth (3).

In the youth divisions, Spradlin led from start to finish in Week 3 as he posted his second best round of 18 from the red tees. Spradlin, 12, of Frostburg, finished with a 56, two strokes back from what he tallied in Week 1. This time, though, only little brother Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, competed in his division. The elder Spradlin holds a 23-19 advantage over his younger brother, who was named the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Player of the Month for June, while Kaleb Logan, 13, of Frostburg, is third (5).

Summer Flex League action resumes July 15 through July 18 at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage. League play and club membership both are free. Players in the men’s and women’s divisions are playing for modest cash prizes, while youth players are vying for gift cards to their favorite vendor.
