CUMBERLAND — Five weeks ago, Sean Fiscus returned to the disc golf course in Cumberland after spending the academic year at Duke University in North Carolina. A Math and Computer Science double major, the 20-year-old LaVale student threw a 55 in that 2022 debut performance, which doubled as Week 11 in the Western Maryland Disc Golf summer league.

That Thursday night, Fiscus felt off the entire round even though the score, even par, was quite respectable and he threw better than three of the other 14 players in the field. Still, the discs simply weren’t going where he wanted them to when they launched from his hand. Putts were more hit than miss.

Jump forward to Week 15, though, and it’s quite clear Fiscus has found his groove. This time, he threw a 2 under par 53 and though he still beat only two other competitors, the score matched his best from the 2021 season, which came on Aug. 12, 2021. In addition, Fiscus was the only one of the 12 competitors on Thursday to tie or beat their season league best.

But Nolan Jones and Scott Mallery, 53, of Mount Savage, led the field. Each threw a 7 under 48, while league director B.J. Lewis, of Frostburg, finished just one stroke behind the leaders for third place. Seth Wilson, 28, of Cresaptown, finished alone in fourth (50) while Brett Workman and. Nic Davies, 26, of Mount Savage, tied for fifth (52). Ethan von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland, tied for seventh with David Warder, 31, of Frostburg, and Fiscus, each of whom scored a 53.

Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, finished 11th with an even par 55 while Sam Wolodkin, 20, of Frostburg, rounded out the field with a 64.

Scott Mallery drives on the course he created in Mount Savage. He rebounded Thursday from a difficult week between baskets to tie for first place in Western Maryland Disc Golf summer league actdion.

Jones and Mallery each threw seven birdies and both managed bogey-free rounds. Mallery held a two-stroke lead over Jones and four others after the front nine. Mallery had a 6 under score of 21 at that point. On the back nine, Jones moved to within one stroke of Mallery after No. 4, and then pulled even on No. 6.
