CUMBERLAND — Allegany College of Maryland student Colby Mallery is officially on summer break. With the academic pressure off, the 19-year-old decided to put some pressure of his own among 11 competitors on the disc golf course.

They couldn’t quite keep up.

Mallery, of Mount Savage, earned the Week 9 victory of the Western Maryland Disc Golf group’s Spring/Summer tag league contest Thursday night at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland. Mallery finished 8 under par with a score of 47. His card included eight birdies. With the win, he earned the No. 1 tag for the first time this season. Mallery became the fifth different winner in the first nine weeks of league play.

Colby Mallery started summer break with a weekly disc golf league victory.

Bill Shreve and Ethan Von Hagel, both of Cumberland, finished tied for second with a 48. B.J. Lewis, of Frostburg, and Scott Mallery, of Mount Savage (and Colby’s dad), tied for fourth (49) while David Warder, of Frostburg, placed fifth (50).

The Mallery father-son duo, along with Lewis and Shreve, were all tied for the lead at 5 under 22 after the first nine holes. On the back nine, Colby Mallery shot a 3 under 25. That was enough to hold off Shreve — who shot 2 under on the back nine — and fend off Von Hagel, who shot a back nine best of 4 under 24.

Week nine was one of the most competitive of the season. Ten out of the 11 competitors shot par or better and five players were separated by three strokes or less from the leader.

League play continues May 19 at Central. Registration begins at 5 p.m. with a 5:15 p.m. tee time. Play is open to the public. League membership is not required.
