CUMBERLAND — Nick Russ ran away from the field of 10 to earn the Western Maryland Disc Golf league victory on Thursday at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland.

Russ finished 12 under par with a score of 43. His effort included 12 birdies. It is the second time this season he won the weekly league competition.

Russ, 43, of Cumberland, and Scott Mallery, 53, of Mount Savage, trailed Frostburg resident David Warder, 31, and Cumberland’s Bill Shreve, 45, by one stroke after the first nine holes. From the longer tees on the back nine, Russ 7 under par 21, a season best during league play and equalling a practice round completed on the same course two days earlier. That was enough to leapfrog the field and take home a four-stroke victory. B.J. Lewis, of Frostburg, shot a 4-under back nine for second place with a final score of 47. Warder, Shreve, Mallery and Ethan Von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland, finished in a four-way tie for third (48).
