FROSTBURG — The fifth annual Shader 5K, facilitated by the group Fifty Shades of Frostburg, is scheduled for Saturday, April 9 with a new start/finish line area in Bobcat Stadium on the campus of Frostburg State University.

Runners and walkers entering the stadium for the finishing kick will be portrayed on the state-of-the-art video scoreboard.

The proposed 5K route for 2022.

For the next 13 days, students can enter for only $10, while adults are $20 apiece and virtual event participants are $25. The event is expected to be held rain or shine. Race-day registration begins at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start time.

Race director Rachel Sooy said the event has submitted a permit application for a new route, reflected in the image to the left. The proposed route would mostly be on or adjacent to the FSU campus. Participants also would run by the clock tower on campus, through the Upper Quad, and on a paved path through the FSU Arboretum.

As of Jan. 21, the event was still seeking at least 60 participants and 30 volunteers.

Proceeds of the event will benefit the Black Student Alliance at Frostburg State University. The BSA “strives to preserve and advance the cultural identity of people of Black African descent in the (United States) by offering cultural, educational and social activities and events,” according to the group’s Bobcat Connect web page. “Membership is open to all FSU students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc.”

The annual event aims to raise funds for a rotation of charities and causes. The race was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions within the community and on campus. In 2020, proceeds benefited the FSU Veterans Center. In 2019, proceeds were donated to the FSU Counseling Center for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Participants will again pass the clock tower on campus.
