CUMBERLAND — The doubles team of Nick Russ and Bill Shreve made par on basket No. 6 on the back nine to pull into a tie, then birdied two of the last three holes for the win on Sunday in Western Maryland Disc Golf Fall/Winter Doubles League competition at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland.
Russ, 43, of Cumberland, and Shreve, 45, of Cumberland, pulled into a tie with Dan Beachy, 38, of Frostburg, and David Warder, of Frostburg, by hitting par on basket No. 15. Team Beachy-Warder bogeyed the hole.
Team Russ-Shreve then birdied the next basket, a par 3, to gain a one-stroke advantage. While the Beachy-Warder duo hit par on the last three holes, Team Russ-Shreve also birdied the final hole to secure the victory.
Team Russ-Shreve finished with a low score of 47. In the win, Team Russ-Shreve birdied eight of 18 baskets and made par on the remaining 10. Team Beachy-Warder followed with a 49, while the father-daughter duo of Jim Buser and Ava Buser, 17, both of Short Gap, W.Va., scored a 54 to round out the top three teams.
Keith Raynor, 45, of Vale Summit, played a modified round as an individual that allowed him to compete as a doubles team. Raynor was permitted one “do over” throw on each basket, similar to a regular doubles team being able to choose between two drives. Doubles teammates then played alternate shot until a disc went into the basket.
