Family in focus at 1st Fall/Winter Doubles League play

CUMBERLAND, Md., Oct. 24, 2021 — For Scott Mallery, there is no such thing as too much family time. So when the opportunity presented itself Sunday afternoon to follow up a family meal with some disc golf with son Colby, he was all in.

And at the end of the day, Scott and Colby stood — together — atop the standings of the four-team competition on a 65-degree day at the 2021 debut of the Western Maryland Disc Golf Fall/Winter Doubles League competition at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland. The father-son duo led the way with a combined score of 109, split between Scott (53) and Colby (56).

The day was, almost to a person, a family affair. The husband-wife combo of Keith (59) and Nicki (75) combined to place third with a 134 while the father-son duo of Kevin (71) and 8-year-old Luke (86, with splits of 45 and 43) rounded out the field with a score of 157. It was Luke’s third time at Central and first time playing a full 18 holes. Luke’s two trips to the course in September, while playing only nine holes each time, yielded scores of 51 and 47.

In between, it was Bill — who shot a day-best round of 50, tying his first-round score eight days previously in the inaugural Western Maryland Disc Golf League Championship, where he finished third overall after tiebreakers — with Kevin, who’s score counted twice in order to field four complete teams.
Bill finished five under par in large part by shooting five birdies on the front 9 and shot for par on eight of the back nine (and one birdie).

Lucas Spradlin-Vogelsang, 8, of Frostburg. It was his first time competing in league play.
