Volunteer, donate online to aid tornado recovery

Greensboro_logoGREENSBORO — The city of Greensboro’s Contact Center continues to serve as a centralized collection point for residents, groups and businesses who wish to volunteer with tornado cleanup, but residents can also now register online. For the City’s Contact Center, call 336-373-CITY (2489) and a representative will collect your information.

In addition to potential volunteer opportunities, the United Way of Greater Greensboro, Goodwill and the Interactive Resource Center are all accepting donations to help residents in need.

  • Goodwill is accepting household goods, including furniture, clothing, home goods, and school supplies from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 1-6 p.m. on Sundays at all Goodwill locations.
  • The United Way of Greater Greensboro will begin accepting monetary donations starting Tuesday, April 17. Donations can be made online at UnitedWayGSO.org, as well as mailed or dropped off at United Way of Greater Greensboro, 1500 Yanceyville St., Greensboro, NC 27405. Checks should indicate the donation is for “Tornado Relief.”
  • The Interactive Resource Center, 407 E. Washington St., is accepting water and non-perishable food items from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

From the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office: Mt. Zion Church @ 1301 Alamance Church Rd., is leading relief efforts. We know they are taking monetary donations as well as bottled water, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc… Please contact the church directly for more information @ 336-273-7930.

From the Weaver Academy PTSA: These lists were compiled from GCS Arts Dept emails. They need:

Monetary donations — You can specifically earmark donations for arts supplies through the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. They are equipped to handle all methods of donations.

All donated supplies (see list below) can be brought to one of four locations:
1) My Office at 501 West Washington St. Greensboro (Nathan Street, Director of Fine Arts for GCS)
2) Gillespie Park Elementary School at 3:30 on Thursday, April 19
3) Lindley Elementary School at 3:30 on Thursday, April 19
4) McIver Education Center located at 1401 Summit Ave. Greensboro all day Friday, April 20.

They need:
> Violins (varying sizes – ensure they are on your inventories and marked with your school info)
> Keyboards (any size will do for now)
> General music instruments
> CD players
> Music and art textbooks
> Visual art supplies: paper, glue, paint, markers, etc.
