Co-race director’s father was diagnosed in Spring 2017

GREENSBORO — For Northwest Guilford High School junior Meredith Sinkler, Spring 2017 was a wake-up call: The world is much larger than a lacrosse pitch after all.

Sinkler’s father was diagnosed a year ago with Stage 3 duodenal cancer, which attacks the small intestine. Sinkler and Samantha Gregory are teammates on the Vikings lacrosse team.
At the moment, however, they and their fellow lacrosse players are teaming up for something bigger than themselves. They are spearheading the inaugural Beating Cancer for the Long Run 5K run and walk.
The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28 on the campus of Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro. Race-day registration and packet pick-up will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The course will begin on the lacrosse field and then follow the school’s existing cross country course. Runners and walkers will finish up on the high school track.
Advance registration is only $15 for the 5K and $10 for the fun run, which is designed for children ages 12 and under. On race day, the 5K entry fee increases to $20. There will also be a bake sale and raffles for gift baskets on the day of the event.
Sinkler’s father underwent surgery 12 months ago. Since then, Sinkler said he’s been healthy enough to return to work.
As of April 1, 55 people have registered for the event. Sinkler’s father was treated at Cone Health Cancer Center, and Sinkler and Gregory will direct proceeds back to the center to help the next cancer patient.
