Staff report
SUMMERFIELD — The Summerfield Town Council has scheduled a special meeting set for 6 p.m. on Monday, April 23 at Summerfield Community Center to discuss with town attorney William “Bill” Hill the current vacancy on the Town Council.
The vacancy occurred when, on Tuesday, the Guilford County Board of Elections determined with a 4-0 vote that Summerfield Town Councilman Todd Rotruck does not live within the town limits. The vote upheld the challenge by Summerfield resident Janelle Robinson, which claimed Rotruck was not a properly registered voter in the town. The four-member board agreed, invalidating his town address. State law requires elected officials to be registered voters in the districts in which they are elected to represent.
The specific purpose of the meeting is for Mayor Gail Dunham and Town Council members to consult with Hill in closed session, as provided by North Carolina Generate Statute 143-318.11(a)(3). Town Council wants legal advice regarding the situation, and the town’s news release announcing the meeting noted that “it is not expected that the vacancy would be filled at this meeting.”
The meeting will take place at the Summerfield Community Center, located at 5404 Centerfield Road in Summerfield.
