ROCKINGHAM — Eighteen students with the Summer Food and Fun Program at Leak Street Education Cultural Center visited The Pee Dee Post on Wednesday morning in downtown Rockingham.
The students were accompanied by Brenda David, program director, five student volunteers from Richmond Senior High School.
Deanna Williams, an RSHS sophomore, said the students have also visited Discovery Place KIDS, gone swimming at the Dobbins Heights Community Park swimming pool and roller skating.
Jesse James, an RSHS junior, said his favorite part of the program has been playing basketball with the kids at Leak Street.
Lexus Smith, 13, said she likes the people and the environment and said she enjoyed swimming in Dobbins Heights.
The purpose of the program, which runs through July 31, is so “we don’t have to sit at home and watch TV all day,” said Janai Davis, 14.
The students were told about how a story becomes a story — that a reporter focuses on the who, what, when, where and why — as well as the differences between breaking news such as a fire or armed robbery and soft news, such as a school field trip.
After visiting The Pee Dee Post, the students walked back to Leak Street Education Cultural Center and boarded a bus to visit Richmond Community College in Hamlet.
