WSOC-TV: Hamlet man beaten in carjacking

Police on lookout for 3 suspects

RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. — WSOC-TV reports that authorities are looking for three men after a victim was beaten unconscious around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in Rockingham.

The victim, a 23-year-old man from Hamlet, told the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office he was pumping air into his tires in the Shiv’s Corner convenience store parking lot at the intersection of County Home and Wiregrass roads when another car came into the parking lot.

Three black men came out of the car. One had a gun, officials told WSOC-TV.

The men demanded money from the victim. When he handed over his wallet, they beat him unconscious and stole everything else he had with him, including his car. He was driving a red 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier.

The car was found abandoned between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.

The victim was taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital for X-rays and CAT scans.

Convenience store workers told The Pee Dee Post that video footage from the store’s security cameras didn’t offer any quality footage of the incident because the air pump is located on the perimeter of the lot in an unlit area.

The store is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Unlike convenience stores in other parts of Richmond County, including East Rockingham and Cordova, incidents at Shiv’s Corner are rare, the worker said, and customers can expect a safe experience during business hours.
