Run-Paddle-Run race and relay set for Jan. 9

Proceeds to fund college scholarship fund

Staff report

ROCKINGHAM — The Pee Dee Post used the informal portion of the monthly Rockingham Downtown Corporation meeting to announce the date of the first Run-Paddle-Run race and relay along Hitchcock Creek in Rockingham.

The event date will be Saturday, Jan. 9. Packet pick-up will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the race will begin at 1 p.m.

There will be two general options, said Kevin Spradlin, event organizer and PeeDeePost.com’s managing editor. An individual can complete the 3.4-mile run, the 3.67-mile paddle from Roberdel to Steele Street and then two loops along the Hitchcock Creek Greenway, or athletes can team up for two-person or three-person relay teams.

Proceeds from the event will help from The Pee Dee Post Community Scholarship, which was first awarded last month to four graduating Richmond Senior High School seniors during the annual Academic Awards Banquet. Each scholarship is renewable on a competitive basis, Spradlin noted. He said he hopes to expand the number and amount of scholarships in future years.

Awards will be earned by the top three male and female overall individuals, plus the top two-person and three-person relay teams. The awards could be expanded based on the number of pre-registered athletes. In addition to the overall awards, individual participants will be awarded custom finisher’s medals.

Entry will open up on Aug. 1. For complete event information, click here.
