Obituary: Monroe Watkins

Monroe Watkins was born on June 1, 1939, to James Watkins and Anna Wall in Ellerbe, NC.

He passed away June 24, 2015, peacefully at home with his wife.

Monroe was a member of the Exodus Progressive Primitive Baptist Church in Pilot Mountain, N.C. He co-owned Bright Beginnings Preschool Centers 1, 11, and 111 in Surry County with his wife, Carolyn. He had a great love for learning and was an advocate for those who wished to further their education.

He attended Mineral Springs High School in Ellerbe and received higher education at Winston-Salem State University, Boston University, and the University of Pennsylvania. He continued to be a learner after attaining his doctorate.

He taught in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System and at Yadkinville Elementary School and was honored to be named the Most Outstanding Young Educator in 1973. This was the beginning of numerous awards and recognitions he received as an educator and due to his involvement in the community. He taught at the St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pa., School of Podiatry in Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem.

He served on numerous boards within the Surry County community.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving wife of the home Carolyn Watkins, two sons, Monroe (Sheena) Watkins II of Winston-Salem, Cedric Watkins of the home, and daughter Crissie Watkins, of Alexandria, Va.; his two grandchildren Nathan and Jeremiah; his brother Fred (Mary) Watkins of Beaumont, Texas and sister Betty Watkins of Hamlet; two brothers-in-law James (LaDonna) McCarther and Sylvester (Ruby) of Mt. Airy, N.C. and three sisters-in-law, Loretta Moore of Detroit, Mich., Crissie (Dennis) of Troy, Mich., and Otha (John) Robinson of Columbus, Ohio; nieces and nephews Angeline K. David (Daniel), nephew Daniel Kendall (Pia), niece Wilma Huey (David), niece Margaret Huey, niece Sandra Jamison, niece Patricia Smith and nephew Bobby Watkins; and many, many great friends.

A Celebration of Life for Monroe Watkins will be held at 11 a.m. on June 30, 2015 at Exodus Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, 179 Exodus Church Road, Pilot Mountain, N.C. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
