Staff report

HAMLET — Melvin Ingram is adding additional star power to his second annual Family Fun Day.

The free event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 at Hamlet Memorial Park. Ingram, a linebacker with the San Diego Chargers, is invited New Orleans Saints linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to the party. Ellerbe accepted the invitation.

Ingram plans the event through “Melvin’s Mission.” This year’s event will include a gyroscope, face-painting, a climbing wall, music, games and food.

From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., there also will be a basketball tournament for athletes ages 16 and up at Richmond Senior High School. Teams will be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Ingram is a Hamlet native and former Richmond Raider. He was drafted in April 2012 by the Chargers in the first round (18th overall selection) of the NFL Draft after posting the fourth-most sacks in school history while at the University of South Carolina. After his 2012 rookie year, Ingram suffered in May 2013 a torn ACL in his left knee.

Ellerbe played a key role in the Baltimore Ravens’ 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013. A month later, Ellerbe signed a five-year, $35 million free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins.

Ellerbe was traded this offseason to the New Orleans Saints.
