Thespians sought for Young People’s Theatre

* 2014 YPT: Rockingham safe with ‘Super Silly Superheroes’ on patrol

ROCKINGHAM — Up to two dozen area youth are being sought to fill roles in the Young People’s Theatre this summer in downtown Rockingham.

Twelve youth ages 8 to 10 and 12 more ages 11 to 14 will help stage the storybook version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum.

Shelly Walker, theater director, said this year’s performance is a straight play — not a musical — of the adopt adapted by Frances Mapp. Some original music and dance will be incorporated into this story version, Walker said.

The Aug. 7 parade from Richmond Community Theatre and performance at Cole Plaza is the culmination of a two-week summer program. The performance is free and community members are invited to watch.

Rehearsals begin Monday, July 27 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those ages 8 to 10 and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for those ages 11 to 14.

Program tuition is $60 per person. Registration will be conducted at theater, located at 109 E. Washington St., Rockingham, each Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon beginning May 23 through June 27.

To participate, children must have ben born between Aug. 1, 2000 and July 26, 2007.
