Teresa Carver was disappointed when she learned official National Train Day activities in Hamlet were cancelled for this past weekend. She didn’t let that stop her from allowing her daughter from enjoying all the city of 6,500 has to offer.

Elizabth Joyce “E.J.” Carver, 5, has become accustomed to having her “train fix” at home. Her mother’s fianc√©, after all, is an engineer with Norfolk Southern.

Craig Hamrick also has started “to build a village in the basement of the house,” Teresa Carver said. “He’s got a huge collection of trains.”

On Sunday, though, the focus turned towards Robert Burns, an avid model trail buff and well-known railroad historian.¬†Burns traveled to Hamlet on Sunday and made the most of his time by making sure E.J. left the museum as the city’s No. 1 railfan.

Carver said her daughter enjoys coming to work with her at Irene’s Beauty Shop in Hamlet.

“The trains, the trains, the trains,” Carver said. “She loves them.”

The gathering wasn’t advertised to the public but Janet Packer, a board member with the National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame, invited the Carver family to visit. Packer’s daughter, Laurel Packer, was on hand to take photos.
