RCC offers Braille transcription course

Braille_closeupHAMLET — Richmond Community College is offering an eight-week course in literary Braille transcribing, which will teach students to transcribe print materials into Braille and allow them to pursue a Library of Congress certificate.

Certified Braille transcribers are currently making between $15 and $25 per hour.

“This is a great opportunity for someone looking to work from home and make some extra money,” said Robbie Taylor, vice president of RCC’s Workforce and Economic Development division. “Whether you are a college student or a retiree, Braille transcribing is a useful skill to learn, and there is a real demand for transcribers.”

The course will be completed primarily online, with classes meeting on five Fridays during the summer semester. These classes will meet from 9 a.m. until noon at the Honeycutt Center in Laurinburg on May 29, June 12, June 26, July 10 and July 24.

Cost of the course is $125, plus a $20 manuscript printing fee. A Library of Congress certificate in literary Braille qualifies recipients to transcribe general literary materials and is a prerequisite for other transcribing and proof-reading courses.

Lessons will include the Braille alphabet, Braille contractions and rules for writing Braille. At the end of each lesson is an exercise with sentences or passages testing comprehension and reviewing concepts and rules. The final exercise of the course is a transcription of 35 pages of material.

In order to qualify for the course, students must be U.S. citizens and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
