Proper send-off to U.S. flags

LEDBETTER — Members of American Legion Post 147 ceremoniously burned discarded American flags collected from around the community on Saturday afternoon at the Legion Post headquarters on Ledbetter Lake.

Participating with Legionnaires were Boy Scouts from Troops 1215, 527 and 49 and Cub Scout Pack 527.

The post receives flags from county and state government buildings, including post offices, as well as local businesses and individuals. Flags can be dropped off at the American Legion drop box at VFW Post 4203 in Rockingham 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The box is located beside the tank.

Post members noted it’s a flag retirement ceremony, and members followed a script by which they honor the service and use of flags as  being symbolic of the freedoms celebrated in the United States.
