Obituary: James David Godfrey

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — James David Godfrey, 76, of Rockingham, died Friday, May 29, 2015 at his home.

He was born October 17, 1938 in Mecklenburg County, a son of the late James Kelly and Marzie Baker Godfrey.

James worked for Griffin Automotive for several years. He was an active member of the Richmond County Jaycees and umpired Little League Baseball for many years. He never met a stranger and enjoyed making people laugh.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Chason “Chase” Brown.

Surviving, His wife of 55 years, Imogene Shipman Godfrey; Children, Shari Brown and husband Greg, David Godfrey and wife Birgit and Mark Godfrey; Grandchildren, Adam Godfrey and wife Kathrine, Megan Reese and husband Chris, Chris Brown and wife Katie and Cooper Godfrey; Sisters, Dorothy Shuman and Peggy Britt; A brother, Gilbert Godfrey; and beloved dog Maggie.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1 at Freedom Baptist Church with Chaplain Ron Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
