Early College announces valedictorian, salutatorian

HAMLET —Dalton Johnson and Weston Wilson have been identified as the top academic students from the Class of 2015 at Richmond Early College High School.

Dalton Johnson is the valedictorian among the 37 graduates. The son of Maxie and Deborah Johnson, Dalton took part in the REaCH Outdoor Club in addition to participating in Science Olympiad his 11th Grade Year. Johnson is an Eagle Scout and enjoys fishing, hiking and mountain biking. He attends First Baptist Church of Hamlet, where he’s actively involved in their Youth Group.

As a youth member, he’s volunteered with Backpack Pals and been instrumental in building handicap rams throughout Richmond County as part of their construction crew. He also has lead Vacation Bible School groups and been on several mission trips. Dalton received the Luther G. Smith Scholarship as well as the Cascades Excellence Award. In addition to earning his high school diploma from Richmond Early College, Dalton is graduating with a Richmond Community College associates degree in Applied Science.

In the fall, he plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Weston is the son of Steven and Dana Willson. He was actively involved in the Beta Club for four years. From the time he was 6 years old, he has been in the Boy Scouts, earning the top ranking title of Eagle Scout when he was 14.

Weston plays countless instruments and performs at many local venues. He was a contestant on Season 7 of The Voice where he finished in the Top 70 across the nation. Throughout his four years of high school, Weston never made a B on his report card.

In addition to graduating with his high school diploma, Wilson earned an associates degree in Science from Richmond Community College. In the fall, Wilson plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he’ll begin his studies to one day become an oral surgeon.
