Fyans earns Honorable Mention in regional art contest

Six Richmond County high school students participated in U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson’s annual art contest.

Alyssa Brown, Ivy Fyans, Latasha Baker, Noah Bowers, Shawn Young and Trinity Stanley represented Richmond County in the competition. Fyans, a Richmond Senior High School student, earned Honorable Mention honors.

The Eighth District winner, Jazmin Williams, a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School, was selected the winner during a reception Monday night in Concord by an Arts Advisory Committee made up of artists from the 8th Congressional District. Winning artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.

Each spring, members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor the Congressional Art Competition to recognize the artistic talents of students in North Carolina’s Eighth District and throughout the nation.

The competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
