Wimberly to discuss connection between natural, human history

April 20 meeting starts at 7 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM — Jesse Wimberly, outreach coordinator for the Sandhills Area Land Trust, will be the featured speaker for this month’s Richmond County Historical Society meeting.

The meeting is is set to begin at 7 p.m. Monday, April 20 at City Hall in Rockingham.

Wimberly will discuss how the natural history, or geology, of the Sandhills region has created the human history as we see it today, according to the society’s monthly newsletter.

He will begin with the Indian Mound of Town Creek to the turpentine industry of the 1800s to the manufacturing which made Richmond County a prosperous community in the 20th century.

The Sandhills Area Land Trust now plays an important role in preserving our rich history by working with land owners and communities to not only protect that history, but to use our natural history and natural resources to make our families and communities prosperous.

Wimberly is a fourth-generation farmer in Moore County and for the last 20 years has worked to restore th family farm known as LighterWood Farm in West End.

His farm serves as an outdoor classroom for school and other civic groups in the area. Kimberly has worked with SALT for the past 10 years.
