Council seeks candidates to replace Billingsley

Staff report

ROCKINGHAM — While Rockingham City Councilman Travis Billingsley prepares for his final meeting, the remaining Council members seek applicants for the vacancy.

City Manager Monty Crump announced Tuesday that council members intend to appoint a replacement at its May 12 meeting, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The timing of the appointment “will allow the new council member to fully participate in the annual city budget process,” a City Hall news release said. “Anyone interested in being considered for appointment to fill this vacancy is asked to submit a letter of interest and statement of qualifications to Crump at City Hall by May 7.

Billingsley announced on April 21 — a story brought to you first on PeeDeePost.com — his resignation in a letter to Mayor Steve Morris.

Billingsley, 35, told Morris that he has recently accepted a promotion to the position of North America Human Resources Director with Arauco-North America and is required to relocate to Atlanta. Billingsley was the youngest person ever to be elected to Rockingham’s City Council.

Billingsley said he and his family will make that move in June when the school year is completed. He’s been working in the new job since Jan. 1 and has split time between offices in Atlanta, Fort Mill, S.C., Bennettsville and Raleigh.

“I have been honored to serve the citizens of Rockingham and (am) proud of what we have accomplished together on behalf of our city,” Billingsley said. “The history books will reflect positively on the contributions during this period of time.”
