HAMLET — Nearly every seat inside Cole Auditorium was occupied sometime Tuesday by a Richmond County middle school student.

They were there to party.

Rockingham and Ellerbe middle schoolers attended the morning session and students from Rohanen and Hamlet attended the afternoon program of the Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana dance troupe. Members of the seven-member team hailed from New Mexico, Spain and France and put together a 50-minute program to teach students about the Flamenco style of dance that originated in southern Spain.

The dance and musical performance was presented by Juerga Latina (an Arts-in-Education program that provides an in-depth experience of Spanish culture and history) and funded through a Cartwheels grant secured by the Richmond County Schools curriculum department.

Dancer Alice Blumenfield explained to students the various tools of the trade — custom shoes, costumes and accessories from Spain that help team members excel at the three necessary ingredients of Flamenco: singing, dancing and guitar playing.

Though some might consider the performances to be a Spanish soap opera, that’s not necessarily the case, Blumenfield said.

“We’re not always telling a story,” she said. More often, “we’re expressing our emotions.”

To that end, students were able to follow their own instincts to keep pace with the happenings on the stage even if they couldn’t understand the Spanish lyrics.

“Vamos a la fiesta,” Blumenfield exclaimed. “We go party.”
