School system hosts strategic planning session

Public to learn of new plan in May

Local leaders, parents, students and educators were a part of a strategic planning session hosted by Richmond County Schools.

The group met on March 16th to discuss the district’s remodeling of its mission, vision and goals.

RCS“We’re all invested in the success of our students, ” said Superintendent Dr. Cindy Goodman. “As we shape Richmond County Schools’ future, know that your input is important.”

Ruth Burgin, director of professional development, gave a brief presentation describing the differences between a mission and vision statement. She explained the mission statement describes what RCS does and its primary objectives; whereas, the vision statement tells where the district wants to be by 2020.

Prior to Monday’s meeting, both school principals and teacher leaders had given their input, so their thoughts too were presented. They included: ensuring students are career and college ready, developing technologically literate students prepared for the 21st century workplace, and producing life-long learners that are creative problem solvers.

From there, the North Carolina State Board of Education Strategic Plan was shown. Guests were then divided into five goal groups to discuss and share ideas about how the district can take the State’s goals and make them Richmond County centered.

Richmond County Schools will now compile the group’s ideas, with the community stakeholders being invited back at 4 p.m. on April 20 to discuss the final plan.

Following their final input, it will then be presented at the district’s May board meeting.
