Scam alert: It’s not the IRS on the line

sheriffMoore County Sheriff Neil Godfrey issued another warning today for residents to guard against sophisticated and aggressive telephone scams.

Godfrey stated that Moore County residents have been receiving and will continue to receive various scam telephone calls.  According to Godfrey, “It’s unfortunate, but we still have victims sending money to these scam artists.”  The most recent reported telephone scam is a scam using the Internal Revenue Service.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has also issued warnings about this scam for more than a year, but unfortunately some citizens are not aware of it, or when they receive similar calls, aren’t sure what to believe or not.

Godfrey encourages residents to always call the sheriff’s office or their police department before sending any money in response to a suspicious call they receive.  Residents are also encouraged to alert family members, friends and neighbors about these scam calls.
