HAMLET — It wasn’t easy, but no one ever said it would be.
Even so, the top-seeded Second Baptist Church “A” team held on to edge the No. 2 Second Baptist Church “B” team 47-43 on Monday night to win the Richmond County Church Basketball League championship inside the gymnasium at Second Baptist Church in Hamlet.
The game was tied 19-19 at halftime.
No. 4 Freedom Baptist 73, No. 2 Cartledge Creek 66
In the third-place game, Cartledge Creek took a first-half lead but Jay Jones hit three consecutive free throws to give Freedom Baptist a 32-30 lead with 1:22 left in the first half and Trenton Butler nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a five-point lead at intermission.
It was close in the second half, but Cartledge Creek simply couldn’t pull out the rally. Jim Wright took a missed jumper and tipped in the putback to pull CC within 59-55 with 3:35 to go. The two teams combined to drain 20 3-pointers — 10 each — in the contest.
Jones scored a game-high 28 points for Freedom Baptist while Butler finished with 21 points. Michael Kirkley led Cartledge Creek with 19 points and Wright added 13 points.
On March 26, SBC’s “B” team beat Freedom 72-58 in one semifinal matchup. In the other, SBC’s “A” team managed a 54-45 win over Cartledge Creek.
