Operation Medicine Drop to begin March 16

a_medMOORE COUNTY — During the week of March 16 through March 21, Moore County law enforcement will join with community volunteers to give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to listed sites. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Operation Medicine Drop is held in conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s 9th annual National Take Back Initiative. It is a coordinated effort by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Safe Kids North Carolina, the DEA, the State Bureau of Investigation, Riverkeepers of NC and local groups to prevent accidental poisonings, substance abuse and protect our waters.

“Every time we collect and destroy a dosage of excess medication, it’s a success. We’re keeping these drugs out of the wrong hands and out of our waterways,” said Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin. “I commend Drug Free Moore County, Moore County Drug Prevention Task Force and Law Enforcement in Moore County for actively engaging their community in this very important initiative and I thank the public for taking responsibility to dispose of medications in a safe, secure way.”

With unintentional poisoning deaths on the rise in the state, Operation Medicine Drop reminds parents and caregivers to:

  • Keep medicines locked up and out of reach of children.
  • Always read labels, follow directions and give medicines to children based on their weights and ages. Only use the dispensers packaged with children’s medications.
  • Avoid taking medicine or vitamins in front of kids, and don’t call them candy.
  • If you suspect poisoning and a child is choking, collapses, can’t breathe or is having a seizure, call 911. Otherwise, take the product to the phone and call the national Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

This service is also provided here in Richmond County at Medical Center Pharmacy and Family Pharmacy.

I think it would look better if “local” businesses were supported before businesses from another county were praised.

    • Kevin Spradlin

In this case, Mr. Sweatt, there was nothing local to promote in place of this news release, which is only 25 minutes or so up the road. The Pee Dee Post is certainly a Richmond County-focused news outlet but we do have readers from all around the area.

It’s the editorial position of The Pee Dee Post that the publication of these type of news releases serves the public good. We aren’t praising anything here; we’re simply allowing PeeDeePost.com to be an outlet to help get unwanted, unused or expired medication off the streets. Who cares where it goes (Moore County or Richmond County) so long as it doesn’t get resold on the streets or get dropped into our water system?

Publishing this news release stands to benefit Richmond County and the surrounding area. The PDP will continue publishing news releases just like this.

If a local company, or local law enforcement, highlights their programs, we’ll publish that, too.

Or Mr. Spradlin could stop making excuses and pick up a phone!

    • Kevin Spradlin

Rachel, you are cordially invited to join me on a “day in the life of” a PDP reporter/editor/webmaster/GM/janitor kind of day. One condition: You have to report for work when I do, and you can’t leave until the shift ends.

Then report back to the public to see if there’s time enough in a given day to call each and every Richmond County business to see what’s going on. I’m sorry, but what I think you’re suggesting is simply impossible.

The folks at Medical Center Pharmacy know the email address for the PDP, evidenced by the news release we published for them in September. They – and any other business – are more than welcome to use it again to submit another news release for consideration.

Thank you for your time. And if you’d care to mention your employer or industry, I’ll be happy to let you know how you should be doing your job.

      Kevin

      • The Sutton’s

How incredibly hurtful and rude. It’s disappointing that someone who claims to care about this community would talk down to people in this manner. Shame on you, Mr. Spradlin. You owe her an apology.

        • Kevin Spradlin

I’m human. The person responded with something less than a cordial tone and I responded in kind. The customer is not always right.

Please tell me the decency in “Rachel’s” statement.
