ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Alene Kelly Hampton, 88, of Hamlet, died Friday March 27, 2015 at Hospice House of Pinehurst.

She was born February 23, 1927 in Hamlet, a daughter of the late E. J. and Maggie McRae Kelly.

She attended the Women’s College in Greensboro and graduated in 1949 with a degree in education. After graduation, she began her teaching career at Jackson Park Elementary School in Kannapolis.  She later moved back to Hamlet, where she taught till her retirement in 1988.

A member of Marks Creek Presbyterian Church, Alene served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher for many years, as a member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church, as well as an elder and was most recently named Elder Emeritus in June 2014.

She was preceded in death by her husband James Riley Hampton, Jr. in 2014.

Alene was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.  She is survived by her children, James Kelly Hampton (wife Robin Hampton) and Janis Hampton, as well as her four grandchildren, Caroline, Anna, Jed and William, whom she loved dearly.  She is also survived by her sister Louise Weatherly of Hamlet.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1 at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ken Goins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet.
