Hamlet falls in ‘Hometown Showdown’ tourney

The city of Hamlet fell to the city of Holly Springs in this week’s voting on “Hometown Showdown.”

The photo contest, coordinated by the North Carolina League of Municipalities, started March 9 by pitting images representing 32 jurisdictions across the state in an NCAA basketball-style tournament bracket.

This week, Jimmy McDonald’s photograph of the Hamlet Depot and Museum attracted 286 “likes,” compared to 661 votes cast for Cinder, the Holly Springs fire station canine mascot. Holly Springs advances to face Fuquay-Varina for the Sandhills bracket title for the right to advance to the Final Four. Voting begins March 23.

Hamlet’s vote tally was down from 407 the previous week, when Hamlet beat the college city of Greenville, 407-178.

The city of Rockingham was ousted in first-round voting in the Piedmont bracket by Siler City, 81-32.
