Move over Duke, UNC and N.C. State. There’s a new kind of March Madness that has nothing to do with slam dunks and basketball scores. Instead, it’s about bragging rights and hometown pride.

The cities of Hamlet and Rockingham are featured in the North Carolina League of Municipalities latest contest. The nonprofit organization aimed at furthering cities’ interests is staging the Hometown Showdown, a single-elimination bracket tournament that pits two cities against each other. Online voting determine each week’s winners and, ultimate, the No. 1 city in North Carolina — or at least the one with the most connected Internet fans.

In Week 1 voting, Siler City fans ousted the city of Rockingham, represented by a photo of Harrington Square at night. The number of votes each city garnered isn’t shown, but one might argue that the Chatham County municipality of 7,887 people scored the upset win over Rockingham, with 9,558 residents.

In Week 2, Hamlet (6,495 people) is up against the 10th largest city in the in Greenville, located in the the heart of Pitt County with 89,130 inhabitants and home to East Carolina University.

Reminiscent of Hitchcock Creek in Rockingham, this photo is representing the city of Greenville against Hamlet in Week 2 voting of the Hometown Showdown.
