The emergency call for help was reported at 2:11 p.m., when emergency dispatchers deployed Cordova Fire and Rescue and East Rockingham Fire Department as automatic mutual aid to a home in the 300 block of Hamer Mill Road. Later on, the North Carolina Forest Service was paged and personnel used a bulldozer to create a fire line. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office also had a presence on scene.

It was not immediately clear what started the blaze. No one who lived at the adjacent home was injured, nor were any firefighters.

It was the second call in as many hours for the East Rockingham crew, which was dispatched along with the North Carolina Forest Service to a report of an outside fire in the 100 block of Wadell Road, located off of Mizpah Road.

At 4:31 p.m., the Forest Service was dispatched to at least its third call of the afternoon and responded along with Cordova Fire and Rescue to a home in the 100 block of Deerfield Road. According to an emergency dispatcher, the occupant of the home was burning trash in a barrel outside and it jumped out of the barrel. The blaze, the dispatcher said, was spreading towards a neighbor’s house.
