ROCKINGHAM — two main lines ruptured in the Richmond County water system over the weekend has caused “a considerable amount of sediment” to be disturbed, said Bryan Land, Public Works director.

Land said this has subsequently caused “discolored water that many customers experienced” and continue to see.

One of the first places residents experienced the foul-smelling brown water was in the area of Roberdel. On Thursday, a resident from the Five Points area near Pine Lane said she’s experienced the same thing.

Land said the Five Points issue is “carryover from the main breaks we repaired on Sunday and Monday.”

“Crews have been flushing lines intermittently over the last few days,” Land said. “Main arteries are looking clear again. If a resident has an isolated area, possibl(y) at a dead end or low usage area, tell them to feel free to call water maintenance at 997-8290 or the Water Department at 997-8201 and crews will be glad to come out and perform a routine flush.”

Land added that residents may need to flush their lines on their end at their residence a few minutes to clear their lines of sediment.
