ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Susan Hawkins Smith, 62, passed with peace on, Feb. 7, 2015 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
Susie was born and raised in Rockingham. She was a graduate of Rockingham High School, Class of 1970. After graduating from UNC- Pembroke in 1974, she returned to Rockingham to begin her career as an educator with Richmond County Public Schools.
In addition to her love of teaching in the classroom, she always carried a strong pulse in Christian education at First Presbyterian Church. Her dedication to First Presbyterian was shown through her service to the Christian Education Committee for 30-plus years, as an elder and a deacon. She retired from teaching after 34 years of service only to continue working part-time at Richmond Community College.
Through the years her love of cooking and baking morphed into a business venture to create meals for others. Even though it was always hard work, she relished those times serving others through those special celebrations of their lives whether it be a baby shower, birthday party, wedding reception or class reunion.
She predeceased by her father Harry Hawkins, her mother Myrtle White Hawkins, and her brother Frank Hawkins.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Clyde, and her children Jennings and Mary Susan; nephews, Will Hawkins and Chris Hawkins and wife Jan and Great nephew, Jack Hawkins.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 904 Fayetteville Road with Rev. Dwight Williams and Rev. Allison Farrah officiating. Following the service the family would like to receive friends and family for a reception in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Youth, 904 Fayetteville Rd. Rockingham, NC 28379.
