CHERAW, S.C. — Three Northeastern Technical College employees were recently named as the college’s Educators of the Year and recognized at the annual South Carolina Technical Education Association (SCTEA) Conference held Feb. 19 at Myrtle Beach.

Valerie Gargiulo, project director for the Predominantly Black Institutions Grant and Dual Enrollment coordinator, was named as administrator of the year; Marty Gooden, Machine Tool Technology instructor, was named as instructor of the year; and Stephen Brown, application analyst and adjunct faculty member, was named as staff person of the year.

“We’re honored to have Valerie, Marty and Stephen on our staff.  These three exemplify what we at NETC have come to expect out of the NETC family.  They truly excel at what each of them do,” said NETC President Ron Bartley.

Each year, faculty and staff at each of South Carolina’s technical colleges vote for local winners, based on performance criteria established by the SCTEA. This year, faculty and staff at NETC selected Gargiulo, Gooden and Brown to represent the college.

Valerie Garguilo of Hartsville, has been with NETC since 2006 and is very passionate about her work at the college.  In her role as Dual Enrollment coordinator, she works with high school students and their parents to give them an edge on their college careers by enrolling at NETC during their junior and senior year of high school.

“Directing the TRUMPET Program and working with such a great group of students and colleagues is very rewarding. I am privileged to be able to help provide the tools and services that empower all our students, from high school to college-aged, to succeed in college,” says Gargiulo.

Marty Gooden of Chesterfield, became a full time instructor with NETC in 2013, prior to this, he was an adjunct instructor and worked for Ina Bearing in Cheraw for 18 years.  As an alumnus of NETC (Chesterfield-Marlboro Tech), Gooden is very student oriented and often dedicates time outside the classroom to further engage his students.

“I graduated from the same program that I now teach, and I have work experience in the industry my students want to go into, which gives me a unique perspective,” said Gooden.  “I know what employers are looking for, and I understand my students’ needs.  It’s great to be able to use my own experience to help our students succeed, and that’s what we’re all here for.”

Stephen Brown of Pageland, has been working with the college since 2010 as adjunct faculty, joining the staff full time in 2013 as a member of the Information Technology department.  Brown graduated from NETC in 2010 and is considered a “go-to-guy” on campus for computer-related issues among co-workers and students.

“I am really honored to be recognized by the college for doing a job that I truly enjoy,” said Brown.  “The field of information technology is an endless learning process and I love sharing that with both our students and employees.”
