Sophia Bobber, 8, of Pinebluff, helped ring in the new year on Dec. 31, 2014 at Discovery Place KIDS in Rockingham. It’s time to party again this month as the children’s science museum celebrates its second birthday.

Join the museum’s Creative Play Professionals for fun, hands-on activities and shows all throughout the day. Watch your favorite circus animals in action in the Circus of the Stars puppet show (10:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.). Boogie and shake with us at the Sandhills Stage as we dance and sing to songs that will get you up and moving during our Big Fun dance party (11:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.). At 3:45 p.m. we’ll have an explosive volcanic Science Show in the Lab and a special birthday Story Time at 1:45 p.m.

Members will also get to enjoy an exclusive birthday breakfast at 9 a.m. before the museum opens to the public. Little guests will get to try screen printing, decorate birthday crowns and party masks and dance with Can-Can.

There will be giveaways from local businesses, birthday cake and light breakfast foods while supplies last. Plus, you can enter to win a drawing for a free membership renewal. Capacity is limited and advance online registration is required.

Current members can register online at discoveryplacekids.org or call 910-997-5266.

Bringing the children’s science museum to downtown Rockingham and renovating the former McKenzie Furniture Building was a project five years in the making — one that was thrusted into action by a $6.6 million grant from the Cole Foundation and the Richmond Community Foundation. The grant was part of a $14.6 million fundraising campaign, which included a significant investment from The Leon Levine Foundation, needed to fund the scope of the educational activities museum officials had in store.
