Schools to operate on time Thursday

Staff report

People are getting anxious.

With the temperature expected to drop to an overnight low of about 12 degrees, Richmond County Schools announced Wednesday that school is set to go on as scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Same goes for school systems in Montgomery County and Chesterfield County (S.C.).

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Child Advisory for the hours between midnight and 10 a.m. Thursday.

wind-chill-advisory“In the wake of a(n) arctic cold front this afternoon … blustery northwesterly winds will usher in bitterly cold air into central NC,” the advisory reads. “The combination of these winds and cold temperatures in the single digits to low teens will produce wind chills below zero tonight through Thursday morning.”

“We’ve received a few calls here,” said Mallory Brown, public information officer for Richmond County Schools, in an email, “and I imagine you may have gotten a few as well.”

Brown said school officials encouraged parents to make sure their children are bundled up and that they wear plenty of warm clothing when traveling to and from school.

In the event of any delays or closures due to inclement weather, Richmond County Schools will notify parents by phone. Information can also be found on the district website at www.richmond.k12.nc.us and on PeeDeePost.com.
