Report: One shot in East Rockingham

EAST ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Couty sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in the 200 block of Hickory Street early Tuesday afternoon for a report of a gunshot wound.

FirstHealth EMS also was called to the scene.

At least one person was transported to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham.

The call for help arrived at the Richmond County emergency dispatch center shortly before 1:40 p.m. A source indicated that a 28-year-old man shot himself in the right shoulder. The condition of the victim was not immediately available.

It was unclear as to how the incident took place — that is, whether or not the shooting was accidental in nature.

The victim was rushed by FirstHealth EMS to Richmond Memorial Hospital to await air medevac for further treatment. A Carolina Air Care helicopter touched down at the hospital helipad at 2:25 p.m. It’s believed that two family member were also at the hospital.

Medical personnel began preparing the victim for transfer from the back of the ambulance to the helicopter at 2:30 p.m. At 2:33 p.m., transfer commenced as two Carolina Air Care personnel guided the gurney to the helicopter. By 2:34 p.m., the victim was securely strapped into the helicopter, which took off at 2:36 p.m.
