Obituary: Thomas Shilen

HAMLET, N.C. — Thomas Sevier Shilen, M.D,. born on Dec. 4, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pa., joined community of saints on Jan. 29, 2015.

He was the son of Joseph Shilen M.D. and Irene Elizabeth Sevier.

Dr. Shilen completed his undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in 1954. There he was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa E and was a member of the marching band. He continued his education and received his doctoral degree at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia in 1959.

flagDr. Shilen then transitioned to Miami where he completed his internship residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He serviced our country and was honorable discharged from the U.S. Army in 1965 where he served as a captain. From 1965 to 1994 he was a distinguished medical staff practitioner of HealthSouth Doctors’ Hospital.

From 1994 until 2011 Dr. Shilen practiced pulmonary and internal medicines servicing Richmond County and the surrounding communities. He was a proud member of First Presbyterian Church of Hamlet and an accomplished pianist, avid tennis and golf player, and truly loved the Miami Hurricanes, Miami Dolphins, and do not forget about the Miami Heat.

He was a brother to the now departed Mary Louise O’Connell, Thelma Irene Shilen and Joseph Shilen Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife Catherine Gulesian Shilen, son Patrick Joseph, and wife Ashley Gunter Shilen, daughter Rachael Shilen Brumund, and husband Bryan Alan Brumund, and grandson Preston Patrick Brumund, and his youngest son whom he so affectionately cherished Zachary Thomas Shilen. In addition, he has numerous nieces, nephews, Marilyn and George Gulesian, and vast in-laws.

A service to celebrate Dr. Shilen’s life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday,  Feb. 3 at First Presbyterian Church in Hamlet with Ruling Elder Belinda Rice officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Watson – King Funeral Home in Hamlet.
