Obituary: Lester Clewis

Lester Barden Clewis, 86, of 438 Boyd Lake Road, Hamlet, N.C., went to be with his Heavenly father on Jan. 16, 2015.

He peacefully took his last breath in his home with his four daughters by his side.

He was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Chadbourn, son of the late Luther James Clewis Sr. and Lona Osborne Clewis. Mr. Clewis was a triplet, the 10th of 13 sons.

Mr. Clewis served in the Navy during World War II, was employed as a carman for 42 years with CSX, was a part- time barber and amateur boxer, and a member of Joy Free Will Baptist Church, which he loved, as well as being outdoors, fishing, golfing and gardening. He also loved music and taught himself to play the guitar, mandolin and harmonica; he spent many hours playing and singing to his daughters.

Mr. Clewis was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Edna Bundy Clewis; and a son, David Earl Clewis; and brothers Graham, Ray, Herman, Borden, Carson, Wade, Robert, Vester, Chester, Vernon, L.J. and Joseph.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda McKeithan (Jimmy), Donna Collins (Charles), Hilda Simmons (Kenny) and Ellen Clewis; grandchildren, Carey McKeithan, Marie Collins, Rocky Clewis, Lonnie Wayne Poston, Charles Lester Poston, Candace Simmons, Kenny Simmons II ; and great-grandchildren, Garrett McKeithan, Rocky Clewis Jr., Austin Clewis, Kodie Simmons and Karley Simmons.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Harrington Funeral Home. At other times the family will meet at his home.

A service to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Joy Free Will Baptist Church. Rev. Lloyd (June) Grant and Rev. Frank McQuage will be officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Memorial Park.

Mr. Clewis’daughters gratefully acknowledge the love, care and support provided to their daddy by Vickie Rankin, Janey Puckett, Brenda Jacobs, Brenda Gibson and all others who helped during his declining health. Because of these wonderful and special caregivers, he was able to remain in his home where he had made so many cherished memories with his family. The family also deeply appreciates the assistance provided from the nurses and other staff at Richmond County Hospice.
