HAMLET, N.C. — Mr. James Thomas “Joe” Chavis, 86, of Hamlet passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015 at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg.
He was born April 13, 1928, a son of the late Zack and Maggie Grooms Chavis.
Mr. Chavis was a carpenter for many years with A. L. Hendrick and then retired from Pinecroft in Hamlet. He attended Church of God of Prophecy in Hamlet. Mr. Chavis was a veteran, serving in the U. S. Army.
Mr. Chavis is survived by a daughter, Dianne Chavis Griggs and husband Donnie of Rockingham; a stepdaughter, Alma Patrick Duggins of Hamlet; a granddaughter, Heather Griggs; a step grandchild, Jody Duggins; a sister, Thelma Knight of Hamlet; two brothers, Roman Chavis and Leavey Chavis, both of Hamlet. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eveline Chavis, and siblings, Fairley Chavis, Hoover Chavis, Bud Chavis, Sterling Chavis, Walter Chavis, John Chavis, Amos Chavis, and Caroline Parrish.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at Church of God of Prophecy in Hamlet with Rev. Steve Crews officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Church of God of Prophecy, 615 Cheraw Road, Hamlet and other times at the Griggs home, 428 S. Caroline St., Rockingham.
