Free seminar to focus on developing bylaws for nonprofits

LAURINBURG — The Small Business Center of Richmond Community College will present a free workshop on developing articles of incorporation and bylaws for nonprofit organizations.

Sam Gore will lead the seminar, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Honeycutt Center in Laurinburg. There is no cost for participation and the event is open to the public.

SBC-LogoGore will discuss the importance of bylaws and the role they play in defining how a nonprofit organization will be managed and how it will run. Bylaws determine which staff and board members have authority and decision-making responsibilities and how those responsibilities should be carried out. They also create a framework for the organization and aid in resolving internal disputes, as well as describe the rules for calling board meetings and how and when board members are elected.

“The bylaws that you set up for your nonprofit organization need to be unique to your organization and its tax-exempt purpose,” said Gore. “Looking at other nonprofit bylaws can be helpful but to simply cut and paste them and use them for you could be very harmful to your continued existence. This seminar will offer expert guidance to make sure all the provisions needed is discussed, and that your unique DNA is represented.”

Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws for nonprofits are sent to the IRS, which will carefully screen them to assure that all the proper provisions are in place. Additionally, potential funders may also want to see a copy of the bylaws to give them assurance that an organization has the functional structures needed to help reach its full potential.

Pre-registration for the Feb. 5 seminar may be completed online at tiny.cc/sbcseminars; or via email or phone by contacting Small Business Center Director Deborah Hardison at ddhardisond@richmondcc.edu or 910-410-1687. Pre-registration preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.
