Washington Street Elementary School teachers Karol Slack and Brittany Mack have a plan to help parents feel more at ease when it comes to helping their children with homework.
They want to equip parents of struggling readers help their children. For many parents, they don’t feel “trained” to help their children learn to read. However, it’s not as hard as it seems.
“There are many things you can easily do at home that will enhance reading and writing skills,” Slack said.
Noticing letters in signs and counting the number of words in sentences can be a start. Using your child’s name to point out the link between letters and sounds. Parents can also build vocabulary by describing a hamburger (or any food for that matter) with their children. It’s juicy, tasty, delicious!
These ladies, along with kindergarten teacher Mary Spivey, shared these strategies with parents and had them practice with their children. Mack, pleased with the parent participation, is hopeful to do more nights like this after the holidays.
