A long list of public safety agencies responded early Saturday morning to the report of a man hit by a train in Rockingham.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., a CSX official contracted the Richmond County emergency dispatch center and said a train worker indicated their train had hit a person, identified as David Wade Young, who had been lying on the tracks. It’s not immediately clear whether Young was also dead before being hit by the train. Police said no foul play is suspected.

A police department spokesman said it was not immediately clear why Young was on the railroad tracks, though a source indicated the man might have been on his way home from Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant where he worked.

Detectives and the Rockingham Police Department’s crime scene investigator processed the scene.

Update: On Tuesday, Kristin Seay, a CSX corporate communications representative, said the train included three locomotives and 82 cars — including 56 loaded. The train left Hamlet was headed to Russell, Kent.

Seay deferred any other questions to local law enforcement.
