Crouch wins monthly, quarterly photo recognition

And it cost him only $8

Staff report

ROCKINGHAM — Robert Crouch is no stranger to being recognized by his peers as a creative, talented photographer.

But as he earned monthly and quarterly recognition by the Richmond County Photography Group, which met Thursday at the Arts Richmond building in downtown Rockingham, he had a rather unique story behind “Expressions,” the group’s quarterly assignment.

“Went to the poor section of town, saw this lady cleaning rooms at a local motel,” Crouch related on the group’s Facebook page.  “Got out and ask her if I could take a few pictures of her, she said ok. After I took few, she said how much are you gonna pay me? I said hold on, reached, got wallet, and I told her all I had was $8. She said, okay that will work!”

Crouch took the photo in Rockingham off Highway 74 with his Nikon D5200.

With the woman’s cooperation, Crouch snapped a photo that features her knowing, experienced eyes that begs a series of questions: What does she know? What has she seen in her life? What is she thinking of this guy taking her photo?

The story doesn’t end there, however. An hour later, Crouch said, he “saw her with a bag of groceries.”

Seems like money well spent on both sides of the transaction.

The second distinction came on group members’ monthly assignment, “fill the frame.” There, Crouch tied with group coordinator Jimmy McDonald. The photo was taken in Rockingham.

Once again, Crouch employed his Nikon D5200. This photo also was taken in Rockingham.

McDonald, meanwhile, used his Canon 5D Mkiii to capture a Fender Strat with amplifier. Settings: Shutter 1/5, F/2.8, ISO 100.
