HAMLET — A source indicates a man attempted to rob BB&B Bank in Hamlet earlier today.
The source said the man fled the bank on foot but was later spotted in a vehicle. It’s believed that law enforcement officials are in pursuit of that vehicle. It was not immediately clear if the man actually took any money from the bank.
Yellow police tape surrounds the BB&T Bank building at the corner of Raleigh and Charlotte streets in Hamlet and customers who enter the parking lot attempting to access the lobby or drive-through lanes leave unfilled.

Area law enforcement officials are not yet commenting on the activity taking place inside the Hamlet branch of BB&T Bank.
Marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles, including from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, are in the bank parking lot. At 12:56 p.m. an identified woman parked her white SUV and hurriedly entered the bank’s back entrance, greeted by another individual. She was one of three women permitted to enter the bank around 1 p.m.
Efforts to contact Hamlet Police Chief Scott Waters and Sheriff James Clemmons Jr. were not immediately successful. A call to the bank’s corporate communications office also was not immediately returned.
