ROCKINGHAM — Two men were taken for further medical treatment after their vehicles collided head-on in an incident Friday afternoon in Rockingham.

First-responders received the call for help from the emergency dispatch center at 3:58 p.m. that included the driver of a white Toyota Corolla entrapped in his vehicle after the crash, which occurred approximately 0.8 miles south of Midway Road on Old Cheraw Highway. The car had collided with a black Dodge pick-up truck with South Carolina tags, though driver Damian Brown is said to live about one-quarter mile away from the scene. The accident took place between Farmstead Court and West Eason Drive.

Both vehicles suffered significant damage to their respective left-front panels. The Corolla was destroyed as firefighters had to cut up the vehicle in order to free the driver.

“The only thing we can do is put ’em in God’s hands,” said a female relative of one of the passengers in the pick-up truck.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision and will determine who, if anyone, is at fault and why. Officers with Rockingham Police Department, along with personnel from the Rockingham Fire Department and FirstHealth EMS.

The condition of the two drivers were unavailable at 5 p.m., though both appeared to be alert and conscious at the scene. Two passengers in the pick-up truck declined additional medical treatment.
