ROCKINGHAM — A Central Taxi driver was transported to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital for evaluation after his cab collided with a telephone pole.

The incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday on Highway Business 74 near Big Lots. The pole struck the center front of the car, which seemed to collapse on impact.

It’s unknown what caused the cab, operated by David Radford, to crash. A witness reported Radford standing outside the cab, talking to first-responders, shortly after the incident.

Radford reported being “sore all over” and suffering from a sprained neck.

A spokesperson with the Rockingham Police Department said that Radford was not charged in the incident, the cause of which remains unknown. Police said Radford “did not remember what caused the wreck.”

Damages were estimated to be a combined $10,000 between the vehicle and the telephone pole.

The crash caused power lines to come down and land on the car. Personnel from Duke Energy responded to replace the telephone pole.
