Pee Dee Electric grant sparks electrifying programs

Discovery Place KIDS visitors to benefit

ROCKINGHAM — Discovery Place KIDS is charged up to bring energy-related lab programs and classes to the community thanks to Pee Dee Electric’s Care to Share grant program.

Their gift of $4,027 will support materials, supplies and technology for energy-related lab programming and classes in the museum’s  I CAN Wonder Why exhibit, an area where visitors can explore and experiment, inquire and discover, test and uncover all while building an understanding of the relevance of science to everyday life.

“Pee Dee Electric has been a wonderful community partner and supporter of Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham since the very beginning,” said Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham Director Katie Rohleder. “We are truly grateful to have this kind of support where we can give back to the community through educational programs like our lab units, and teach our patrons about the science and impact of their work.”

Some materials provided by Pee Dee Electric’s gift will support programming in the museum’s December Lab programs on electricity. Guests will get to explore the science of static electricity, experiment with Makey Makeys to make a banana piano, investigate the electrical energy of lightening and circuits, and transform the wind into energy. Each Lab unit takes place at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Saturdays and 2:15 p.m. on Sundays in December.

This gift comes from the Pee Dee Electric Care to Share Grant Program where members are able to contribute a few cents each month to support various non-profit organizations throughout the communities it serves. By simply rounding up their monthly electric bill to the nearest dollar amount, Members have contributed more than $826,000 since 2005. Monthly contributions can be as small as one penny, but never more than $.99. The extra cents, together with contributions from other members, are placed in a special trust managed by Pee Dee Electric’s board of directors.
